Below is a quick blog post about how to treat cattle using a dart gun. I link the exact model we have as well as the darts we prefer to use with it. I also review some of the pros to treating cattle this way and why we chose to purchase one in the first place.
Treating cattle using a dart gun has several benefits. It is a much less stressful on the herd and quicker for the rancher. You do not have to take the time to bring the herd in, sort the sick animals off or bring panels out to pasture to treat them there. This increases time to treatment, which will in turn increase efficacy of the treatment. They are an investment, but we highly recommend getting one for your ranch or farm.

DARTS: THE DARTS WE USE
We purchase the 3cc, 5cc, 7cc and 10cc sizes and then depending on the size of the animal will pick accordingly.
BENEFITS TO TREATING CATTLE USING A DART GUN
1.) TREATING CATTLE ALONE
We have only had our dart gun for about 3 years. Luke originally purchase one because at the time it was just he and I on our operation, we didn’t have any help, and when you’re working alone it can be extremely challenging to treat alone. The dart gun helped so much in that arena allowing Luke the freedom to treat when and where he wanted without having to call in any help.
2.) TREATING CATTLE IN POOR WEATHER
It is also great for treating in weather. It can be a challenge to rope and treat a calf out in piles of snow, so having the dart gun for weather related instances is extremely helpful.
3.) TREATING CATTLE IN REMOTE LOCATIONS
Another great reason to treat cattle using a dart gun is it enables you to treat in remote or poor locations. We have summer pasture that is miles away from any corrals and during winter are grazing corn stalks that are removed from any chute and corrals either. Having the ability to treat cattle no matter the terrain and location enables us to better care for our cattle.
